Well maybe it was a little too windy.
I was at the soccer field across from my house today and the winds were 15
gusting to 30. I have flown it these kind of winds before so I thought it would
be no problem. Winds were a 80 degree cross to the only safe way to land but
again I have done lots of crosswind landings.
The demise ended up being the location I decided to set my field box
. I had it pretty much in the middle of the field where I stopped to gas up and
start the plane. I was up and flying for about 10 minutes and decided since this
was a new motor and was not sure of fuel consumption so I was bring it in for a
landing. I had not realized that I had been taking a steps back and to the right
of my field box as I was flying. So I was looking to the right at the plane
concentrating real hard on not acing it into the ground cause it was darting
around pretty good in the wind. As I was tracking it to the left all of a sudden
the field box cam into my view, but it was two late, smashed into the uprights
that the plane sits on. It hit just behind the wing at about a 45 degree angle
because I was crabbing in for the landing.
Pieces every where. It is pretty cold out so the fuse was kind of brittle and it
just exploded, sending servos battery and receiver all over the place. gears in
the rons, elevator and rudder servos are trashed. Case of the elevator and
rudder servos destroyed, my brand new 14x4W prop broken. Gear bent all to heck.
leading edge of wing mangled.
All in all pretty much a total right off.
